Distribution of Forest Areas in Turkey to the General Area of the Country
The most distinctive feature of Turkey’s forests, which consists of 48% coniferous, 32% leafy and 20% mixed (coniferous + leafy) tree species, is that they are natural forests.
Coniferous trees do not only consist of pine species, but they also include cedar, spruce, fir, and cypress species. The most widespread leafy species are oak, beech, chestnut, plane trees and hornbeam.
Pine is the most widespread primary tree species in Turkey. The types of pine trees, which make up about half of Turkey’s forests with 11 million hectares, are Turkish pine, Black pine, Scotch pine, Stone pine and Aleppo pine. Oak species come second with an area of 6.7 million hectares. The Black Sea Region has the largest forest area of Turkey with a rate of 24.4% in terms of the area covered by coniferous and leafy trees.
Located on important migration routes, the forests of Turkey are home to 454 bird species, approximately 171 mammals, 105 reptiles and 180 freshwater fish.
