Forest101 / Forest Biodiversity
Biodiversity consists of the genes, species, ecosystems and ecological phenomena in a region and it covers all of the species that carry these genes, the ecosystems that host these species, and the processes that connect them.
Biodiversity in an ecosystem consists of four main parts:
1) Genetic diversity,
2) Species diversity,
3) Ecosystem diversity,
4) Diversity of ecological processes.
The endless series of ecological processes between these parts and each other creates the invisible but systemically important “functional dimension” of biodiversity. The forest ecosystem constitutes of the richest areas with trees, plants and wild animals and is the shelter of most of the world’s biodiversity.
