It is the heat energy carried to the surface by hot water, steam, and gases, which are above the regional atmospheric average temperature and may contain more dissolved minerals, various salts, and gases than the underground and surface waters in and around it.

It has different application areas such as heating, cooling, electricity production, mineral production, use for spa purposes.
